The young Swiss tenor Mauro Peter caused a sensation at the last Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, when, along with pianist Helmut Deutsch, he was asked to give a replacement concert for a recital that had been cancelled at short notice. From the very first notes, this noble unknown got the audience in his grip and didn't let go. At the tender age of twenty-five, he has everything it takes to be a good Lieder singer: perfect voice control, a flawless legato, expressive colours, dramaturgical insight and natural charisma. Mauro Peter went on to perform a devastatingly convincing 'Müllerbursche'. As the story progressed, he created an enormous build-up of tension, carrying the audience with him through an intense gamma of emotions, from falling in love, to jealousy, disappointment and depression, before finally finding release in death. Upon which, after a long period of silence, the audience burst into wild applause. It was one of those rare concert moments that are truly unforgettable. We promptly invited the duo to come and repeat their performance at deSingel, in between Peter's engagements at the Opernhaus Zürich and his début at the Salzburger Festspiele. This much is clear: Mauro Peter is just embarking on a great career.
