'Jump!' is the name of the debut CD of the young German cello wonder, Maximilian Hornung, who carried off the 'Echo Klassik Preis' for best newcomer of 2011. Indeed, the jump from first solo cellist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra to a highly promising solo career has proved very successful indeed. The way this lively performer gambols through the various styles in music history is an absolute delight. His musical intuition leads him always to do the right thing: at the appropriate moments, he has his instrument wailing ironically, shyly asking for attention, tearing its soul out or radiating aristocratic control. The Ukrainian pianist Milana Chernyavska is the perfect foil for Hornung's virtuoso leaps and bounds.
During this concert, glorious classics from the cello repertoire play leap-frog with less well-known works. Hold your hats for the energetic finale of Saint-Saëns' first Cello Sonata and the wild gallop in Nadia Boulanger's 'Trois Pièces'.
