Monk Happening
What a difference a Monk makes?
Thelonious (Thelious Jr.) Sphere Monk (1917-1982) was a highly original and contrary musician and entirely self-taught. His piano-playing was angular and unpredictable and is often dismissed as dissonant and unrhythmical, but it always has a compelling, magical persuasiveness. During this 'Monk marathon' several performers will present their extremely individual and contemporary view of the master. The stage will be stormed successively by the pianist Michiel Braam, who will let us hear the results of a workshop together with students from Antwerp Conservatory, the trombonist Roswell Rudd and guitarist Duck Baker, both restless experimenters, the pianist Ran Blake, with a ritual power entirely in line with Monk himself, Johnny Griffin, who played with Monk in 1957 and '58, and Alexander Von Schlippenbach, who will be tackling the whole of Monk's work with several kindred spirits from 'Monk's Casino'.
