'Shelter' is a new joint project by the legendary New York 'Bang on a Can' composers Michael Gordon, Julia Wolfe and David Lang. For this work, which lasts the whole evening, the three composers are working with various other artists with whom they have a long-standing collaboration: the librettist Deborah Artman, the Ridge Theater, the musicians of one of Europe's most adventurous ensembles, musikFabrik, and the Norwegian singers of Trio Mediaeval.
'Shelter' was commissioned by musikFabrik, Kunststichting NRW and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It is an examination, in music, set design and video projection, of our dependence on our surroundings for security, comfort, support and protection. The human need for shelter is both physical and mental. 'Shelter' looks at the kind of protection we need and choose for ourselves, but also at the kind that is chosen for us, the kind of shelter that liberates us and the kind that confines us. The music is surrounded by film and video. Sometimes the projections are the literal limits of the physical space in which the performers play and sing, while at other times they create a virtual open space.
