In ‘Passio’ old and new find one another in a driving rhythm and touching melancholy. Moreover, both are surprisingly harmonious. With a video installation halfway between a Baroque still life and a contemporary ritual, the Belgian-Italian stage director Luigi De Angelis adds a visual layer, inspired by the movies of Pasolini. And you’re able to hear this thanks to the surprisingly varied concert programme.
Scarlatti’s St John Passion from 1685 is exceptionally beautiful, rich in pathos and expression. Together with music for Easter week from Gesualdo and Scarlatti, this short but powerful passion story is joined by the ‘Miserere’ from Tommaso Bai, as well as a string quartet from Dutch composer Louis Andriessen. The Dutch grand master allows music for two voices to segue into rock-solid tutti, with a nod to Allegri’s famous version of the 'Miserere'.
