Arthur (naar H Purcell King Arthur)
A hundred years after the start of the first modern war, the director Paul Koek and author Peter Verhelst sketch a view of the battlefield – once everything is over.
Two women and a child are walking through a flat landscape that has changed beyond imagination, suddenly filled with hills that were not there before and pools full of water that was hidden under the ground. One of the women is looking for her husband who has come here from the remoteness of Africa to fight in an incomprehensible war. The other is looking for her own land as she used to know it, but which can no longer be found. In the meantime the young Arthur does what every boy does: fantasises about heroism and courage. And about the victor’s desire for pleasure.
Starting out from and faithful to the original ‘King Arthur’ by Purcell, they sing of the indescribable suffering that the world endured a hundred years ago. Purcell’s music, including the renowned arias ‘Cold Genius’ and ‘Fairest Isle’ will enable you to experience the incomprehensible deep under your skin.
