Nadar Ensemble's haunting fusion of live music, performance, and video
The Nadar Ensemble presents a poignant evening in which music, film, and performance collide at the boundaries of censorship, activism, and stillness. Composer Alexander Khubeev expresses the claustrophobia of Joseph Brodsky’s iconic poem in Don’t Leave the Room. Sign language and music merge into a suffocating score in which silence becomes deafening. The Iranian composer and animator Golnaz Shariatzadeh unleashes her fury and despair in Blue Womb, a hallucinatory fusion of live music and animated film, born from the aftershocks of the Iranian revolution.
Likewise, film and music from the past sound ominously contemporary. In The Chorus by Abbas Kiarostami, an old man grapples with the cacophony of the city - and simultaneously with the voice of the future. In Galina Ustvolskaya’s uncompromising Piano Sonata No. 6, radical, revolutionary music emerges that was never allowed to rise above Soviet censorship.
The Nadar Ensemble, in-house artist at DE SINGEL, confronts you with the question: what do you hear when everything falls silent? A silence that fills the space, and arrives with greater force than sound.
