The young National Philharmonic of Russia, under the baton of Vladimir Spivakov have already twice set deSingel alight. This time they will be inspiring you with the work of Edvard Grieg. His Concerto for piano and orchestra evokes the wilderness of the Norwegian fjords and the rugged landscapes in which he grew up, and folk music is always a frequent element. The Russian keyboard virtuoso Nikolai Tokarev is already getting his fingers warmed up. Grieg’s ‘Peer Gynt’ exudes a deep love of his native country even more than the Piano Concerto. Henrik Ibsen’s eponymous play recounts the adventures of a young fellow who travels from the mountains of Norway to the African desert. Grieg illustrates the trips with some of his most everlasting melodies, including ‘Morning Mood’ and ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’.
