introduction Tino Haenen . 7.15pm . Blue Bar
Decca called him 'the best-kept secret in the piano world'. But true piano-lovers have been aware of Nelson Freire for a long time. He built a cast-iron reputation from the the very start of his international career. It is based entirely on his skill, because he has kept well away from the media and publicity. In addition to his solo career, he became well known as the permanent piano partner of his bosom friend Martha Argerich.
Freire plays with love and wisdom. Alternately lyrical, exalted, spiritual, explosive and dreamy. He often opts for exceptionally fast tempi, but without losing his focus on clarity and detail, colour and phrasing. He himself sits motionlessly. Everything flows naturally from his powerful fingers and supple wrist movements. From the outside seemingly unmoved, but on the inside a fiery temperament!
