PLEASE NOTE! The concert by Nelson Freire has unfortunately had to be cancelled. The pianist is suffering from acute tendinitis and has had to cancel all his concerts until the summer.
The Decca CD label has pronounced him "the best kept secret in the piano world". But for real piano fans the Brazilian Nelson Freire has long since ceased to be a secret. From the very beginning of his international career in the early 60s he established a cast iron reputation. This was based purely on merit. Due to his modesty, he distanced himself from the media and withdrew from every type of publicity. Alongside his solo career he acquired a particular reputation as the steady piano partner of his bosom friend Martha Argerich.
Nelson Freire plays with love and wisdom. His playing alternates between the lyrical, exalted, spiritual, explosive and dreamy. It always has a hypnotic intensity. He often opts for unusually quick tempos. Not to show-off, but simply because he is he able. He loses none of the clarity and detail, colour and phrasing. Sitting impassively, everything flows naturally, transferred through his strong fingers and supple wrist movements. Externally unmoved, but a fiery temperament within!
