New London Chamber Choir . James Wood
At the late-night concert in Augustinus we hear the New London Chamber Choir in a different guise from the day before: as performers of early music in choral works for a single and for many voices, the reference work being the motet for four voices, 'Ave Verum Corpus' by William Byrd (1543-1623). This is joined by the purest gems of the fifteenth and sixteenth-century British choral art, with work by Thomas Tallis, John Sheppard and John Browne. These choral works are alternated with 'Sonatas and Interludes' for prepared piano (1946-48) by John Cage. In this work, the percussive, gamelan effects result from precise instructions, noted down in the score, for the positioning of pieces of rubber and felt for the 'preparation'.
