For years, Nicolas Callot and Lucas Blondeel have been mining the fascinating repertoire of the great composers for piano four hands. Both in the case of Beethoven and of Schubert we can find traces of the light-footed character once associated with the piano duet, such as in the selection of a march, or of a series of variations. The Fantasy in F is one of Schubert’s last works, composed for Karoline, daughter of Count Esterházy. Schubert played the work alongside her, with the ‘play of hands’ no doubt creating some excitement. Both the scope of the work and the intensity of the musical themes are on an equal footing with the greatest sonatas from the piano repertoire. With a world premiere by emerging talent Eveline Vervliet, Callot and Blondeel bring the piano duet firmly into the 21st century.
