In 1620, Constantijn Huygens heard ‘the most perfect music I ever expect to hear in my life’ in Venice. It was the vespers in honour of John the Baptist, set to the music of the musical director at San Marco, Claudio Monteverdi. In the 1980s, Fits Noske made a reconstruction of these ‘Vespri di S. Giovanni Battista’ with music from various sources: smaller works from scattered publications, also by other composers than Monteverdi, and the ‘Selva morale e spirituale’. They are outstanding for their refined inventiveness, melodic elegance and colourful accompaniment. From the playfulness of ‘Dixit Dominus’ through the swing of ‘Confitebor Tibi Domine’ to the solemn grand scale of the ‘Magnificat’. The éminence grise Peter Neumann presents a programme to make your mouth water.
