Brahms' troostrijke Requiem
Door zijn revolutionaire en verfrissende kijk op barokmuziek slaagt Philippe Herreweghe er moeiteloos in om de brug te slaan tussen verleden, heden en toekomst. Juryrapport Ultimas
The waiting list is completely full.
‘Since Bach’s Mass in B minor and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, nothing more has been written in this field that can match up to this Deutsches Requiem.’ Such exultant words were already being written about Johannes Brahms’ breakthrough
at the time of its composition. Equally full of praise were reviews of Philippe Herreweghe’s recording of the requiem in 2008: ‘(his) inborn feeling for the musical lines (…) is clear throughout as he sculpts this work.’ More than fifteen years after Herreweghe sequestered himself in the studio with the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, he now presents the imposing and deeply human composition on the stage of the Blue Hall together with the unsurpassed Collegium Vocale Gent. After all this time on the rostrum, it goes without saying that this unique liturgical work - with texts in German and not in the expected Latin - seems tailor-made for Herreweghe.
