Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir recreate Viennese baroque; a trip to the 18th century.
First we need to go back in time: up until the late 18th century the Esterházy family were responsible for unprecedented blossoming of Hungarian musical life. Not only by bringing Joseph Haydn into their court, but prior to this too. It is this atmosphere of musical richness that the Orfeo Orchestra and the brilliant Purcell Choir from Hungary have taken as their starting point since their foundation in 1991 by conductor György Vashegyi. They are now calling in at DE SINGEL for the first time with religious works from the era of Haydn’s predecessor at the Esterházys: Gregor Joseph Werner. This concert will enable you to experience for yourself that the music by the man that Haydn so greatly admired is not inferior to a masterpiece such as Vivaldi’s famous Gloria. But the hidden gem in this richly chequered programme is the benevolent sound world of the Missa Sancti Paulivan by Vivaldi's hardly known fellow-countryman and contemporary Francesco Bartolomeo Conti. Choir, orchestra and soloists are given every opportunity to shine here.
