Paul Lewis and Steven Osborne sit shoulder to shoulder at the keyboard. On the programme are a series of gems of French music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The wonderfully clear sounds of Fauré contrast with Poulenc’s turbulent sonata and the sensual tones of Debussy. In his ‘Three Easy Pieces’, Stravinsky pays a waltzing tribute to Erik Satie. With ‘Ma mère l’oye’ Maurice Ravel composed the fairy-tale music to the eponymous ballet, but it is chiefly the version for piano four hands that has won the hearts of so many pianists. Fairy tales such as Tom Thumb, Sleeping Beauty or Beauty and the Beast come to life in the imaginative sound world of a highly impressionistic Ravel. This promises to be a wonderful recital.
