A contemporary Viennese critic described Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 as a ‘snaking, wounded dragon that refuses to die’. And this while Beethoven himself was still brimming with creative energy and physical strength. He did not yet know where his notes would lead him. But the fact that they would trace out a wholly unique, innovative path was something that he keenly anticipated. His Second sounds like a stimulating chunk of zest for life, full of dizzying hairpin bends and daring contrasts. Equally the Emperor Concerto with Pavel Kolesnikov promises to be a delightful adventure. In between Beethovens you hear Tüür’s Phantasma, his inspired tribute to a youth full of vinyl from Ludwig van.
