1h Picea Orientalis and ‘The Nomadic Troubadours’: an Eastern take on old European music.
The Picea Orientalis pine trees grow in northern Asia Minor and the Caucasus. Their wood was used for both Eastern and Western string instruments, but also to construct the oud (Eastern short-necked lute) and the bağlama (Turkish long-necked lute). The Syrian violinist and composer Shalan Alhamwy studied both classical and Arabic music. He soon came up with the idea of blending the Western and Eastern musical traditions into a single ensemble, Picea Orientalis. A string orchestra that mixes Western structure, harmony and techniques with Eastern decorations and improvisations. With ‘The Nomadic Troubadours’, Picea Orientalis goes even deeper and wider to approach old European music with an Eastern ear. They do that together with Aktas Erdogan.
