Three nonpareils on a single stage: star pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Beethoven’s ‘Hammerklavier Sonata’ and the ‘Concord Sonata’ by the American Charles Ives. The ‘Große Sonate für das Hammerklavier’ was regarded as unplayable until Franz Liszt tackled it. Even for a seasoned expert such as Pierre-Laurent Aimard, this work is no walk in the park. And as if this were not enough, he opens the concert with the monumental ‘Concord Sonata’ by Charles Ives with its marked stylistic contrasts and citations from other music, namely Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and … the ‘Hammerklavier’. The four parts of the sonata are inspired by the American writers Ralph Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott and Henry Thoreau. You’ll struggle to find the words to express your admiration for this piano virtuoso.
