Prometheus Ensemble - Etienne Siebens
Prometheus is venturing out with two masterpieces.
The visionary Canadian composer Claude Vivier (1948-1983) wrote 'Bouchara' for soprano, wind quintet, string quintet and percussion in 1983. This piece is part of a larger cycle of works on the subject of the mythological figure of Marco Polo. The title refers to Bukhara, a city on the Silk Route in Uzbekistan. 'Bouchara' is a love-song in an imaginary language (typical of Vivier), where the singer's part does not have a single moment of rest.
Olivier Messiaen wrote his 'Quatuor pour la fin du temps' for clarinet, violin, cello and piano at the prisoner-of-war camp in Görlitz in Schleswig in the winter of 1940. For this work he was inspired by the biblical passage on the Apocalypse when the angel, brought down from heaven, heralds the end of time. Messiaen was not concerned with expressing the terror of the end of time in sound, but wanted above all to express Catholic believers' faith in the greatness of God. In this score he masterfully gives shape to the infinite and timeless.
