In two concerts, the Prometheus Ensemble and Ictus will be paying tribute to the Hungarian world-citizen György Ligeti (1923-2006). In the first concert, Prometheus will seek out the context of his compositions. Their programme spans about a quarter of a century of his oeuvre, combined with two of his most important influences: the music of Béla Bartók (1881-1945) and Hungarian folk music on the one hand, and on the other the rhythmical and metrical complexity of the player piano of the American Conlon Nancarrow (1912-1997), who emigrated to Mexico. The programme looks like a typical Ligeti kaleidoscope: from the anarchic sixties to the many-layered eighties. He himself once said: 'I avoid stylistic clichés and do not have one, single, true direction. I remain open to new influences. Every culture, in fact the whole wide world, is material for Art'. With such results as the absolute masterpieces of the Piano and Cello Concertos.
