Weinberg Discovery
For an entire day, the spotlight is on Mieczyslav Weinberg (1919-1996), a composer unknown and neglected - totally unjustifiably, in our opinion. This Polish-Russian with Jewish origins had everything necessary to go down in history as a famous composer. His oeuvre, extensive and impressive, bears his explicit signature and can stand comparison with the work of Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Indeed, it was Shostakovich who recognized his talent and brought him to Moscow. Outside the walls of the conservatory, war rumbled on; within them, he met such great musicians as Gilels, Richter and Oistrakh, for whom he was able to compose. And compose he did - unceasingly - as a means of compensating for the massacre of his entire family and to have his Jewish voice heard.
The Danel Quartet came to the music of Weinberg via the widow of Shostakovich; playing Weinberg's Thirteenth Quartet, they were immediately smitten. The Quartet has now recorded all seventeen of the string quartets and is doing all in its power to have Weinberg receive the recognition he deserves. Come along and discover this intriguing composer.
