With Steve Reich, Quatuor Tana creates a musical evocation of a piece of history
Following the decision of the Council of State to lift the closure of the cultural sector, we can confirm that this concert can take place in safe conditions with a maximum capacity of 200 spectators. Tickets already sold for this activity are no longer valid. Ticket holders who have received a refund in the meantime will be contacted personally. Please note that new seats are not numbered.
The Quatuor Tana keeps its finger on the pulse of new music. They collaborate with composers and invest in the training of young artists. For this concert, there are scores by Steve Reich on their indispensable iPads. The title of the three-part Different trains is easy to explain: between 1939 and 1942 the composer travelled by train from New York to Los Angeles, between divorced parents. Later it came to him that a life in Europe would have looked totally different. He would have travelled on different trains to different destinations. With WTC 9/11 Reich creates a musical evocation of another key moment in recent history.
Different Trains by Steve Reich is one of his most autobiographical works and a milestone in his oeuvre. Reich reinvents the string quartet genre, with an exciting interplay between live music and samples of voices, train noises and sirens. The work won the Grammy Award for best contemporary composition in 1989. The famous Kronos Quartet made the very first CD recording for the Nonesuch label.
