You may not yet be familiar with it, but you should allow this brilliant young quartet to take you in its grip. Having learned the ropes with members of the Alban Berg, Artemis and Hagen Quartets, the Quatuor Van Kuijk is amongst the crème de la crème of quartets. Van Kuijk opens its contribution to the Beethoven integrale with Opus 18, No. 3. Haydn is not far away, but Beethoven’s own voice can already be clearly heard in the alternation between lyricism and grandiose bravura, in sharp dynamic accents and dramatic modulations.
In the Opus 59, No. 3, Beethoven continues to perfect his craft in virtuoso playing with rhythmic and melodic motifs and emotional and dynamic contrasts.
The Opus 135 is the final quartet that Beethoven completed. A musical joke? In any case, this is gorgeous music!
