Any opportunity to stage the music of Louis Andriessen is welcome, but a birthday makes it a particularly special occasion. In 2019 the pioneer of Dutch minimal music will be blowing out 80 candles, and to mark the occasion, pianist, musicologist and Andriessen expert Ralph van Raat will be guiding us through the complete piano works of the grand master. The titles that Andriessen gave to his piano compositions are highly diverse and allude to musical history. The ‘Rondo Barbaro’, which recalls Bartók, or ‘Souvenirs d'Enfance’ that suddenly reminds one of Stravinsky, and so on. ‘Trepidus’, on the other hand, is pure, unadulterated Louis Andriessen. Ralph van Raat effortlessly follows the many registers in which Andriessen plays.
