1h Heer Halewyn was a mythical singer, seducer and magician. His story crops up in numerous variations from Iceland, to Hungary, to Sephardic Morocco, but its most ancient roots probably lie in Flanders. Raphaël De Cock tells the tale of Halewyn in a contemporary version, based on the famous medieval ‘Ballad of Heer Halewijn’. He brings together artists from different backgrounds in order to use their ‘languages’ to arrive at a project full of hybrid perspectives. The addition of new styles of music and compositions results in a contemporary translation, entirely in line with the organic development that the ballad has undergone whilst being passed down in the oral tradition. A sound artist and a sand artist create the right atmosphere; and the princess heroine and the villain Halewyn are given a voice and sing their story, accompanied by numerous instruments. With the texts as their starting point, Raphaël De Cock and his fellow musicians have allowed their musical imagination free rein and have sought out a suitable sound and mood for each episode in the story. A project that goes back to its Flemish roots, after multiple peregrinations through the centuries.
