Raphael Malfliet Large Ensemble
LE10 18-05
How can you retain the spontaneity of improvisation when there is no clear distinction between composition and improvisation? Raphael Malfliet was already wrestling with this question when he was working on his album ‘Noumenon’ in 2016. In order to flesh out this concept further, he put together a large ensemble of international musicians with a variety of musical backgrounds. Their sound spectrum tends to gravitate towards classical ensemble, although some passages are vague, meaning that improvisation plays a significant role. At the same time, the research into the music of Iannis Xenakis led to a fascination with acoustics, spatiality and frequency, something with which Raphael is already experimenting now and will continue to develop. Surprise is an important binding element for musicians and audience alike.
