Reinbert de Leeuw

The man who repudiated the whole of music history all on his own. That's how the pianist Reinbert de Leeuw describes the eccentric French composer Erik Satie. Parisians saw him more as part of the furniture at the renowned cabaret Le Chat Noir. He sat there writing music that no one could make head nor tail of. Dreamy melodies that lead nowhere while yet constantly changing. Miraculous accumulations of sound. It was indeed as if musical history had briefly come to a standstill.
In this concert, De Leeuw returns to his old love. In the 1980s, his recordings of Satie's piano music sold like hot cakes. All of a sudden, classical music was at the top of the hit parade. Satie's whirling themes, with the occasional harmonic witticism, have all they need to fill concert halls once again.
