Since the 17^th century, the free form of the ‘fantasia’ has been inspiring composers to write creative music without rigid structures. This can lead to true masterpieces, as the ‘Moonlight Sonata’ proves. Beethoven’s mysterious romanticism had a profound impact on the Hungarian composer György Kurtág’s poetic sound world. Daniel Moreira’s world premiere also contains echoes of Beethoven. The British composer Julian Anderson draws inspiration from the Moorish architecture of the Alhambra. Capricious melodies and turbulent drama make up the ultimate contemporary counterpart to Mozart’s expressive virtuosity.
