Daan Janssens has composed a brand-new score for the Japanese cult film from 1926. The listener-viewer is transported into an atmospheric, colourful and at times alienating sonorous universe. Classical instruments are amplified and manipulated using live electronica, so that the audience becomes fully immersed in the impressionistic images of this silent art-house film. Director Teinosuke Kinugasa paints the residents’ subjective perception in an out-of-control insane asylum. The film is a masterfully rhythmic, surrealistic ballet in black and white. At its core is a human drama of titanic proportions: a family broken by the insanity of the mother seek out survival strategies and attempt to filter out the madness from reality.
