The pianist Richard Goode does not actually enjoy being in the spotlight. Ideally, he would prefer to play in total darkness, so that there would appear to be no performer and there would be nothing standing between you and the music. As if you were hearing the composer speak directly to you. In this programme, Goode lets his favourite composers sing for you. Haydn hums the melancholic funeral march theme from his variations in F minor. Mozart gives you lessons in counterpoint in some of his rarely performed pieces in the style of Bach. Beethoven philosophises about partings and reunions in his Sonata ‘Les Adieux’. Janácek engages in solitary reflection on the past in ‘In the Mists’. Finally, Chopin cries his Polish heart out.
