Philip Pickett and his Musicians of the Globe are iconoclasts of early music. They are specialists in sixteenth and seventeenth-century music. For 'Nutmeg & Ginger' they worked together with the folk legend Richard Thompson, a cofounder of the British folkrock band Fairport Convention in 1967 and from the eighties onwards a successful solo artist, especially in the United States. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Thompson is one of the best guitarists ever.
They describe their programme, which they compiled specially for this concert, as 'foot-stomping folky ballad tunes, fine sentiments, immoral tales & scurrilous doggerel". So expect to hear lively ballads, mischievous folk songs and dances from the London of William Shakespeare. An eclectic mixture of popular Elizabethan music that was played on the street and in taverns. Besides this they play a collection of authentic instruments: fiddles, zithers, early guitars, lutes and hurdy-gurdies. Also expect to hear traditionals such as 'Greensleeves', 'Lie still my dear' and 'Nutmeg and Ginger' on the programme.
