1603: Gesualdo, prince and murderer, writes musical notes that still sound modern today.
1607: Monteverdi more or less invents opera and then writes the conservative 'Missa in Illo Tempore'.
1610: Galileo turns science on its head and incurs the wrath of the Vatican.
They dared. They took a great leap forward. 'In Illo Tempore' is all about progressive thinking. It includes both revolutionary and conservative choral works from the 16th and early 17th centuries. Performed by the Nederlands Kamerkoor directed by Peter Phillips, who founded the Tallis Scholars. And the speaker is the young philosopher, opinion-maker and journalist Rob Wijnberg. To the heavenly tones of Gombert, Lassus, de Rore, Gesualdo and Monteverdi, Wijnberg thinks aloud on the subject of progress. A 'Keen Thinker' concert to cherish.
