Are you also waiting in anticipation for the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra? Since they have become one of the best orchestras in Europe, it is always a treat for the music expert and the less experienced music-lover alike when they make an appearance. We are especially pampered when our favourite violinist Antje Weithaas comes together with the top international conductor Eliahu Inbal.
Anton Webern (1883-1945) only left a limited collection of works, but what is extant possibly constitutes the most visionary music of the twentieth century. The words minimal and concentrated capture the essence of his work. The 'Six pieces' from 1910 are superb examples of his ability to apply consistency of colour.
Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) wrote his violin concerto in 1939 and reworked it in 1959. Although the influence of Mahler and Stravinsky is noticeable, he was able to develop his highly personal style in this early concerto.
'Eine Alpensinfonie' is the last symphonic poem by Richard Strauss (1864-1949) and dates from 1915. As the title suggests, it is inspired by Strauss' view of the Alps from his villa in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The poem sounds like a living description of a mountain walk, step by step. Few other works can match this example of beautiful sound painting.
