The high-profile chief conductors of today are in their twenties or at most their thirties. Besides such names as Gustavo Dudamel, Yannick Nézet-Séguin or Andris Nelsons, they also include Lionel Bringuier. After five years of glowing reviews with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, this young Frenchman is making his long-awaited debut in Europe.
In prospect for Bringuier is, among other things, a colourful programme of French music with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. First on the bill tonight is Berlioz's overture 'Le Carnaval Romain', a work with which the composer made his name as a revolutionary orchestrator. The fact that Maurice Ravel, too, knew how to bring new colours to the orchestral palette is shown by not only the second 'Daphnis and Chloé' suite, but also the famous Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, written following a commission by the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm in the First World War. Roussel's Third Symphony is one of his best-known.
