The Japanese composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda is an artistic all-rounder who sets to work with all facets of sound and image. Alongside monumental installations in which he combines video with electronic soundscapes, the artist also has purely acoustic sound projects on the go. In an almost scientific manner, he orchestrates visual and acoustic material, which culminates in a special result.
For his Music for Percussion Ikeda consciously chooses to put electronic gadgets aside. He works exclusively with acoustic instruments or objects, until sounds are created that come suspiciously close to electronic music. Cymbals, triangles, metronomes, books, tables, pieces of paper, pencils or basket balls: nothing is too crazy to make music with. What’s more, the visual aspect is never far away: the percussionists play the geometrically arranged instruments and objects with choreographic precision.
