1h 15' Irish tradition meets jazz and improvisation.
Following his debut album Stillorgan (2020) with the trio Thunderblender, composer and saxophonist Sam Comerford goes back to his roots in traditional Irish music. In March 2027, his first album in seven years, heaven, will be released.
Inspired by the innovative Dublin fiddler Tommie Potts (1912–1988), Comerford, alongside three close musical partners, creates a radical hybrid: the untamed energy of Irish tradition fused with contemporary improvised music and jazz.
Fiddle player Ultan O’Brien, hailing from Ennis and deeply rooted in Irish music, brings a keen ear and rich experience to the ensemble. Together with Hendrik Lasure and Jens Bouttery, he shapes a new group sound. Bouttery swaps his drum kit and bass synth for live sampling, manipulating the group’s performance in real time and playing it back - a subtle estrangement that simultaneously deepens and enriches the acoustic sound.
