The San Francisco Symphony has been piling up Emmys and Grammys for years, but they like to underscore their impeccable reputation live too.
Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas first serves up 'Dubinushka', composed by Rimsky-Korsakov. It is an orchestration of a folk song, heard during a protest march in Moscou.
Shostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto is a totally different proposition. It tugs on your heartstrings, but there is a seam of biting sarcasm running through even the most desolate solo passages. Gautier Capuçon already recorded the concerto in 2015 and regards it as one of his favourite pieces.
Finally, there is Stravinsky. He wrote his rousing ballet ‘The Firebird’ for a monstrously large orchestra, with which he paints a lively portrait that is both shocking and moving. Thus this concert literally touches on the full range of emotions!
