The name is a sign. With this name, the three Schumann brothers were destined to become musicians. Together with the German-Estonian viola player Liisa Randalu, they formed a string quartet whose success soon rose to new heights. Of course, Robert Schumann is on the programme, with the three string quartets of opus 41. However, the main discovery in this concert will be Reger’s Clarinet Quintet, with the acclaimed clarinet player Sabine Meyer in a star role. Reger wrote the work in 1915. It became his swan song, however, as ten days after the score had been printed he died of a heart attack. At the premiere a reviewer described the work as follows: ‘The elegiac work exudes the deep, holy peace of a soft autumn evening enveloped in shining gold by the last rays of the setting sun.’
