A modern fairy tale from Nathalie Teirlinck for children aged 7+
Following the internationally acclaimed productions Staring Girl and Slumberland, Zonzo Compagnie and the Ghent-based filmmaker Nathalie Teirlinck are teaming up again for a new production featuring film, music and theatre in a challenging combination. This time Liesa Van der Aa will be providing the music along with the conch shell ensemble Spiral Consort.
One night a boy with no memories washes up onto the shore. Encounters on the beach teach him the rules of the game. Or maybe it is those he meets who have the most to learn from him.
When the lights go down, you find yourself submerged in a sensory world where first the music, then the film or the actors’ voices guide you through the feelings and experiences of the strange child who washed ashore. We experience his wonder as he discovers everything
for the first time and we share his encounters with colourful figures on the beach.
SHEL(L)TER is a modern fairy tale to enjoy with your heart and your head, tackling issues such as ‘being different’, caring for other people and self-esteem. It is about what it means to be a child or simply a human being, and above all about the universal longing for protection, a home, ‘to belong’.
This performance was meant to be part of the BIG BANG Festival 2020, the adventurous music festival for a young audience that was due to celebrate its 25th birthday this year. However the programme is being slimmed down because of coronavirus. That means there’ll be no BIG BANG festival this year, but instead a BIG BANG Bubble with the performances SHEL(L)TER and HUSH. If circumstances allow, we'll be bolting on a fun addition. And in autumn 2021, we promise to celebrate a sparkling postponed birthday party with you!
