Sibelius Happening
If there is one composer who has managed to put Scandinavian music on the map it is Jean Sibelius. Making more of a contribution than his Norwegian colleague Edward Grieg, this 'grand old man' of Finnish music ensured the presence of the music from the High North on the musical map. Sibelius' majestic and inexhaustible work based on the Finnish epic story 'Kalevala', with its atmospheric sound landscape, unorthodox harmonies and newfangled melodies, has become known as the perfect soundtrack to Scandinavia's natural landscapes. This is reason enough for presenting a day of this extremely sensitive composer's oeuvre and making him the focal point of our ninth composer happening.
