Cellist Sol Gabetta comes from Argentina, and the pianist Henri Sigfridsson is a Fin from the Far North, but their different geographic origins do not impede their musical communication. It is amazing what this exceptional young talent has been able to accomplish at such an early age in such a short space of time. Rather than list an endless stream of superlatives, we urge you to come and discover them for yourself in this recital, perfect for true romantics. In the three 'Fantasiestücke opus 73', Schumann gave full rein to the poetry in his music. The first part of the piece has a subtle delicacy but it closes in the Finale with untameable passion. César Franck, commonly nick-named 'the Belgian Brahms', wrote his famous Sonata in A major as a wedding present for the violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. Yet even during his wedding party, the groom couldn't resist the temptation to grab his violin and try the piece out. The Cello Sonata from 1934 was Shostakovich's first major chamber music piece. Whereas in his earlier compositions he tended to write more experimental works, in this Sonata he surprisingly reveals late romantic traits. The Sonata became a model for the new, accessible 'music for the people' that Stalin's cultural officials propagated.
