‘Wild flowers and grasses, grown into the cracks of the machine’ is how Gérard Grisey describes his ‘Talea, ou la machine et les herbes folles’, a masterpiece from one of the founders of spectralism. This composition method can be traced back to a long French tradition. Naturalness, found in the composition of the sound itself, and slow, subtle flavour transformations are the basic recipe. In ‘Bouchara’, Claude Vivier laces a love song in an imaginary language with strings and wind instruments. Luc Brewaeys also developed his highly personal palette in the French spectral kitchen. In ‘Painted Pyramids’ he garnishes his piano solo piece ‘Pyramids in Siberia’ with five instruments and live electronics. SPECTRA plays, narrates and thus reveals the culinary secrets…
