In just a few years, the English chorus Stile Antico has acquired exceptional status in the world of early music. The aesthetic credo of these young Brits is quite clear: away with the infinitely polished sound of Renaissance polyphony, which for decades has been synonymous with the typical English approach. There is no continual balancing of all the voices, nor a perfect but bloodless portrayal. Instead they try to get at those profound emotions that lay behind the lines of polyphony, to discover the meaning of the text. In the hands of Stile Antico, polyphony blossoms with an unexpectedly full-bodied sound. And when the music demands it, the ensemble does not shy away from intimate treatment. During their concerts, it seems as if the sunlight is actually is allowed to reflect back through stained glass windows with bright, undiluted colours, in a play of light and shadow. Qualities which Renaissance music for the sensual poetry of the Song of Songs shows to full advantage!
