From whispered prayers to piercing cries. A programme by Swedish Chamber Choir
How does Passiontide sound in the High North? Is it a period of darkness and longing, or in fact a quest for the first light? The Swedish Chamber Choir, one of the foremost vocal ensembles in Scandinavia, under the visionary direction of Simon Kim Phipps, presents an intense and captivating programme centred around passion, mourning, and hope. At its heart lies David Lang's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match Girl Passion, a poignant and intimate retelling of Andersen's The Little Match Girl, inspired by Bach's St Matthew Passion. Surrounding this are vocal gems from the North that reveal the deeper layers of Passiontide. The hushed pain of Sandström and Lidholm and the overwhelming sounds of Bo Holten. This promises an evening of extremes, from whispering prayers to anguished cries, from darkness to light. This is choral singing at its most powerful.
