The renowned Sydney Symphony Orchestra opens this concert with ‘Engelsflügel’ by the Australian composer Brett Dean, a cheerfully frolicking work for wind and percussion.
Talking of angels, Alban Berg gave his Violin Concerto a subtitle: ‘In Memory of an Angel’. In this moving musical farewell to Manon Gropius, the daughter of Alma Mahler, Berg shows more than ever that he was a modernist who always kept one foot in Romanticism.
The same applies to Sergei Prokofiev. As a counterbalance to the violence of the Second World War, he composed his Fifth Symphony as a bittersweet ode to life.
The American principal conductor has invited superstar Renaud Capuçon to play this challenging Berg concerto. He is a regular guest at both deSingel and the Elisabethzaal
