Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen / Christoph Koncz
Muziek als protest
Flanders Symphony Orchestra emphasises the value of protest music with Christoph Koncz.
Music can change the world. Revolutions often start with a song or a melody. The Flanders Symphony Orchestra, led by guest conductor Christopher Koncz, plays music that was created as a protest against injustice. Joseph Haydn, for example, wrote his Abschiedsymfonie to complain that he and his musicians were forced to move every year between the summer and winter palaces of Prince Esterházy. He had the musicians stop playing one by one and leave the stage, as a silent protest. Dmitri Shostakovich, who was in a difficult position under Stalin, used some of his Symphony No. 9 to criticize the Russian "victory" over the Nazis without deploying direct words. Around 25 years earlier, Edward Elgar spoke in direct tribute to the British who died unnecessarily in the First World War in his Cello Concerto. Cellist Johannes Moser compellingly brings this tribute to life.
