Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen / Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir
Mozarts onsterfelijke Requiem
Flanders Symphony Orchestra and Kristiina Poska pay tribute to Mozart’s Requiem.
A Requiem Mass written on the edge of the composer’s own deathbed. This means there’s is an irresistible myth swirling around Mozart’s Requiem. Although even without the myth’s magical power, Mozart’s notes are profoundly moving. This is music that radiates respect, for the past and for death. With passages that exude a fiery terror, but also parts that are filled with a dancing longing, and finally cautious comfort. Chief conductor Kristiina Poska once again invites her compatriots from the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. Together with a capable quartet of soloists, they offer a refined rendition of this missa pro defunctis. Alongside this, the choir also performs the intriguing Kreek’s Notebook from the Estonian composer Tõnu Kõrvits. He conceives his work as a notebook full of Estonian folk hymns, forgotten music that is closely interwoven with the history of the country. Kõrvits sculpts hypnotic sound landscapes with it, full of melancholy and subtle harmonic colours.
