Mahler composed Das Lied von der Erde in the aftermath of the incredibly painful events that turned his life upside down. His eldest daughter died, his position at the Viennese opera became untenable, and he was diagnosed with a heart condition. Suddenly he found himself staring into the abyss. It would be a year before he started composing music again. A collection of ancient Chinese poetry showed him the way. 'Dark is life, dark is death’, Das Lied von der Erde became Mahler’s deepest confrontation with human mortality. In the stunning Der Abschied it appears that by degrees Mahler wishes to cease battling death. ‘Where I am I going? I’m going into the mountains.’
