Classical heritage reimagined: Brahms, Haydn, and Mendelssohn with fresh energy and flair
Martijn Dendievel turns 30 at the end of 2025, and a month later he will be handing out business cards as the new chief conductor of Flanders Symphony Orchestra. This new chapter will begin with a tribute: Luc Brewaeys’ Symphony No. 3 ‘Hommage’. A multi-layered and intense work in which Brewaeys honours his musical predecessors, while he himself resolutely shifts the boundaries of the orchestral sound. This quest for his own voice is a common thread running through the programme. Mendelssohn, the child prodigy who at a young age wrote the Violin Concerto with which soloist Liya Petrova sparkles. And Tchaikovsky, whose Symphony No. 1 reflects his battle with the symphonic form, but also his quest for his own, Russian voice.
A concert about inspiration, transformation and daring to take a first, big step: the kick-off of a new chapter for Flanders Symphony Orchestra.
